27/10/2009 02:02
The giant search engine Yahoo! Made announcement on Monday that Free web hosting service GeoCities will finally get terminated, after a duration of 15 years. The company pastes a disclaimer on GeoCities help page, giving an alert to users about the freehosting service, which they have backed up till later today, moved or saved the pages.
The disclaimer reads that if no download of files and images is done before October 26, 2009, there will be no longer need to access the data. After the date, the GeoCities files will be deleted from the servers and would not be recovered. Yahoo! first made announcement in April that it would discontinue the services, after declining the usage over the years, as the personal web spaces begin to use more concise URLs. The search engine company purchased GeoCities in 1999. Yahoo! is making a hope to migrate any remaining GeoCities users onto the Small Business web hosting service.
The company acclaimed that the paid services work a lot like GeoCities and includes a personalized domain name, like widgetdesigs.com and matching the email, new website building tools, unlimited disk space and bandwidth, superior customer support and more. The service will be priced at approximately $4.99 per month, for the first 12 months, then $9.95 per month thereafter.
In the meanwhile, the non profit Internet Archive digital library has made efforts to preserve the GeoCities pages for former users, by adding to its database.
